Combining idealism with violence, the New England-born abolitionist John Brown cut a wide swath across the United States before leading an attack on the U.S. armory and arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. That raid roused the country to a fever pitch of sectionalism and accelerated the onset of the Civil War. Brown was quickly captured and after a short but stormy trial, hanged. But Brown argued his case against slavery with an eloquence that reverberated around the world, and became a symbol of the struggle to abolish slavery and a martyr to the cause of freedom. Led by the Honorable Dennis J. Curran, retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice. He has taught law at Tufts University, Roger Williams University School of Law, and Brown University.
