Author Sena Desai Gopal will deliver a presentation based on her new book, The 86th Village, in this Zoom webinar. Gopal grew up in Yadahalli, a Southern Indian village whose days are numbered. In her lifetime, her hometown will drown in the backwaters of one of India’s biggest dams -- The Upper Krishna Project. In fact, 176 villages will go underwater, and more than 123,000 families will be displaced. Sadly, the government of India does not have a concrete rehabilitation plan for the people who will be left homeless and without livelihoods. Gopal will discuss the need for "managed retreats" -- proactively move people, structures, and infrastructure out of harm’s way before disasters or other threats occur to avoid damage, maximize benefits, and minimize costs for communities and ecosystems.

About The Author: Sena Desai Gopal is a journalist specializing in science and medicine, food, and travel. Her work has been published in The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, Modern Farmer, and The Times of India, among others. Sena was born in Southern India and now lives in Boston with her husband and two children.
