Gilded Newport, or proof that while money can build a magnificent house, “money can’t buy happiness.” In this illustrated lecture, our second stop in Newport, Rhode Island will look at three very different ‘cottages,’ that quaint, tongue-in-cheek term for some of the largest and most expensive houses ever built in America. Explore Chateau-Sur-Mer, Rosecliff and Rough Point, three homes that span the history of the competitive building that went on in Newport over 70 years, from 1852 to 1922. Delve into the lives of the people who called these houses home. Whose party was considered “incomparably the grandest private entertainment ever given in the country”? Which hostess had a flotilla of ships made to enhance the view for her guests? And which Newport cottage was home to two live camels? Enjoy this look at how the rich and famous lived in Gilded Newport. Led by art historian Mary Woodward, a guide at several Historic New England properties. She previously served as Public Programs Coordinator and Educator at the Concord Museum.
