We may take for granted the use of color in a painting, but historically, much thought, effort and expense has gone into that choice. Drawing on the work of author Victoria Finlay, art historian Mary Woodward will explore the world of pigments and learn how certain colors were created. Along the way, we’ll discover an entire room painted with smalt…and surprisingly, it’s quite close to us. And we’ll learn about the intrigue and danger associated with even the most basic colors …lead white, for example. After this, you may never take simple, old “red, white and blue” for granted! Woodward is a guide at several Historic New England properties and an art historian. She previously served as Public Programs Coordinator and Educator at the Concord Museum. Woodward has a B.A. in Art History from Furman University and a M.A. in Art History from Emory University. She has 40+ years of experience, in museums of all shapes and sizes, from the comprehensive collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art to the one-room log cabin birthplace of President James K. Polk.
