About The Book: Boston Made: From Revolution to Robotics-Innovations that Changed the World tells the remarkable story of how Boston has spawned an unparalleled number of world-changing innovations, encompassing every area of human endeavor, in its 400-year history. The book is built around 50 innovation stories and images that author and innovation expert Dr. Robert Krim and co-author Alan Earls have chosen from a list of more than 400 critical innovations uncovered in a 12-year study involving hundreds of experts. It answers questions like: What led Alexander Graham Bell to be able to invent the telephone in Boston, rather than in one of the three other cities he had called home? Why was the computer core memory invented in Boston? Why was the first organ-transplant in the world performed in Boston? And why was Mass the first state to abolish slavery, long before others? Crucial for all food lovers, why was the chocolate chip cookie here? And, critical to our own time, the Kendall Square world biotech center is home to Moderna and Pfizer research facilities, both central organizations in the critical effort to produce a coronavirus vaccine. 

About The Authors: Robert Krim is the founder and leader of the Boston History and Innovation Collaborative, for which he assembled a multi-university research team who worked with hundreds of organizations and businesses studying nearly five hundred innovations that changed the world and were developed in Greater Boston. That research evolved into "Four Centuries of Innovation," a permanent exhibit at Boston Logan International Airport. He has a BA from Harvard and earned a master's in US History, a master's in Economics, and a joint PhD/MBA from Boston College. A professor at Framingham State University, Krim founded the Entrepreneur Innovation Center. Alan R. Earls is a Boston-area writer who has covered high-tech innovation for more than thirty years. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books on innovative enterprises such as Polaroid, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Raytheon, as well as regional histories.
