John James Audubon was a French-American artist and naturalist who, starting in the 1820s, set out to document every bird in his newly adopted nation of the United States. The result was his masterwork The Birds of America, a massive collection of hand-painted bird engravings. Measuring over 3’ by 2’, this work is still considered by many to be the finest book ever published. Learn about Audubon’s methods for collecting and drawing, how the book was made, the style and artistic beauty of his prints, and Audubon’s legacy both positive and negative. Led by Eric J. Simon, Ph.D., a professor at New England College in Henniker, New Hampshire. Dr. Simon received a B.A. in biology and computer science and an M.A. in biology from Wesleyan University, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. Dr. Simon is the author of a widely used series of college biology textbooks with over 2 million books in print that help teach biology to students in over 40 countries. Dr. Simon also leads international biology-themed travel courses and teaches online lifelong learning classes at a variety of institutions.
