Explore the early creation of the Paris Salon in the 17th century and its prominence from 1748 until 1890 as the center of the art experience in France. As public access to the Louvre museum increased in the early 19th century, so too did accessibility to the Paris Salons, generating even greater interest amongst the general public. Examine the role of the Paris Salons in provoking the creation of avant-garde exhibitions amongst the Realists, Impressionists, and Post-Impressionists in the late 19th-century and early 20th century. Led by Martha Chiarchiaro, owner of Seeing History, who has brought history to life through the art of the times for more than 30 years. She received her Masters’ degree in the History of Art from Williams College and provides a variety of art history presentations at the Worcester Art Museum, the Worcester Institute for Senior Education (WISE), libraries, senior centers, and garden clubs.
