OUTDOOR PLAY SERIES: An Evening With Dolley Madison

Tuesday, July 136:30—7:30 PMEvent LawnTewksbury Public Library300 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, MA, 01876

With passion, charm and wit, actress Sally Mummey dispels the myth and fable that obscure Dolley Madison. In a first person portrayal, Mummey captures the essence of Dolley by using her own words and performs this living history in proper 19th century clothing.

In 1809, James Madison became the fourth president of the United States. His wife, Dolley, stepped competently into, and established, the role of First Lady.  Although she is best known for her hospitality, few people know of her influence in the intricately woven world of politics, government and culture. Dolley became friends with, and hostess to, 12 past and future presidents. At a time when our young country endeavored to establish a foothold on the world stage, it faced British aggression, culminating in the War of 1812. Dolley Madison's response to these pressures -- her self-sacrifice, compassion and courage -- garnered such admiration nationally that became the only woman in American history who Congress voted an honorary seat in both houses of Congress. She became the most influential woman in the nation, from the time of her husband's presidency until her death. Because of her contributions to this nation, she should be considered a "Founding Mother."

Sally Mummey's passion for the history of the 19th century has led to extensive research into powerful and prominent women in a male-dominated society. Mummey is an award-winning lifetime member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters. She is also a member of the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Society of Europe, the Victorian Society, the Surratt Society, and Solo Together .

This living history performance will take place on the library's back lawn. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets or chairs. In case of inclement weather, the performance will be rescheduled for August. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
