IN PERSON: LIVING HISTORY -- An Evening with Frances Perkins (First Female Cabinet Secretary)
Monday, January 87:00—8:00 PMMeeting RoomTewksbury Public Library300 Chandler Street, Tewksbury, MA, 01876
Cockroaches congregated in the upper desk drawer, and not a single other cabinet member ducked out of his office to say "hello." Such was Massachusetts native Frances Perkins’ initiation as country’s first women cabinet secretary (Secretary of Labor). Learn about the often unpredictable personal and professional missteps, scandals and hard-won triumphs that characterize her years in office and beyond. Frances will tell stories about: life with FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt; the list of demands she presented to FDR before accepting the position of Labor Secretary; impeachment threats hurled her way; techniques she used to work with men; her involvement in the creation of the New Deal; Frances's post-political life teaching at Cornell; and troubles with her husband and daughter. This one-woman play is performed by actress Janet Parnes, founder of Historical Portrayals by Lady J.
